James "Dub" Hudson

James W. Hudson, known in the music world as "Dub", was born in Lilburn, GA. He began playing clarinet at the age of 12. In 1956 he graduated from Clark College in Atlanta, GA and did further music studies at Northwestern School of Music in Evanston, Illinos. "Dub" served two years in the U.S. Army fro 1951 to 1953 playing clarinet and saxophone in the 8th Army Band in Korea & the 16th Army Division Band in Fort Leanord Wood, Missouri. Mr. Hudson also served as a Band Director for the City of Atlanta School System for 29 years. He has played with many celebrities such as Tay Charles, Lena Horne, Della Reese, Dizzy Gillespie, Lou Rawls, Tempatations, Cleveland Lyons, The Dells, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Holliday, and more. Mr. Hudson is also well known for performing in various shows at the Fox and Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. Some shows he has performed in are Raison, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Ain't Misbehavin, Five Guys Named Moe, Beyond the Rainbo (Life of Judy Garland) and in March of 2007 toured with Jennifer Holliday. He has also performed and appeared in several movies which includej Scalpel (1978), Grass Roots, (1992), Mama Flor's Family (1998), and performed recordings for the 2006 movies, "idlewild" and "Class fo 3000", which airs on Cartoon Network. Mr. Hudson appeared on numerous occasions on Channel PBS in Atlanta. Dub is featured on several CD recordings which includes "The Steve Dancz Quartet featuring My Friend "Dub"" (produced in 2004 by Three Lion Records), : The Peachtree Strutters" 2006, and "Relaxin At Underground" (produced in 1990 by Music South Records). He is also included in a book (ps. 98-100) which was published in 1998 entitled, "Images of America: African-American Entertainment in Atlanta" by Herman "Skip" Mason, Jr., for his great contributions to the Jazz entertainment world in Atlanta. Mr. Hudson performed on the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Europe in 1999. Dub is currently playing and recording with the blue grass band, Georgia Crackers and teaches private music lesson to serious clarinet and saxophone students with Atlanta Band Center.
